Every site class the register recognises

Staffed buildings whose load is heating, cooling, lighting and desks. The controllable load is the HVAC, the working day sets the shape of the half-hourly chart, and the tariff question is whether anyone is paid for turning the chillers down at four in the afternoon.

Public premises open long hours: shops, branches, restaurants, hotels and forecourts. Refrigeration and kitchen plant run whether anyone buys or not, so the load is flat and the meter type decides what the site can report.

Large sheds with few people and a lot of chilled or frozen volume: warehouses, distribution centres, cold stores and depots. These are the biggest lines on most registers, the ones with a significant energy use to baseline and the ones a demand response programme wants.

Sites that make something: plants, bakeries, workshops, laboratories and packing lines. Batch processes, ovens, compressors and process heat; gas and CHP appear here beside the grid supply, and sub-metering is what separates the process from the building.

Buildings that cannot go dark: clinics, hospitals, care homes, campuses and schools. Standby generation and continuity sit beside the energy question, and the reporting owner is usually a different person from the one who reads the meter.

Assets with nobody there: car parks with chargers, data rooms, plant rooms, batteries and pumping stations. They are often unmetered or estimated by rating, they are the sites most often missing from a register, and the battery and the chargers are the assets that can flex.
